Computer monitors and TV screens converted into glaze for ceramic tiles

20/02/04 - The first tiles featuring an innovative glaze produced from recycled computer monitors and TV screens were unveiled a few days ago in Reggio Emilia.

This new material is the result of a multi-sectoral project called “Production of new materials for industry – Feasibility study for recycling vitreous and plastic components of decommissioned TVs and computers” set up by the Province of Reggio Emilia for the purpose of reducing waste and promoting reuse of waste.

The Department of Materials Engineering and Environment of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia conducted laboratory research in the ceramic sector in cooperation with Refri (a company responsible for recycling and treating electrical and electronic waste, which supplied the material). Vitreous components of scrapped television CRTs and PC monitors were transformed into a special powder which was used as a secondary raw material for the formulation of ceramic glazes. Equipment and instruments contributed by Colorveggia were used to verify industrial applicability.

The first results are a line of tiles produced using this glaze, although research is still in progress with the aim of finding new and alternative solutions.

All that is needed now is a company interested in using these new eco-friendly materials as part of its production process.
