Thai ceramic industry continues its growth
According to figures announced by the Thai ceramic federation and the Ceramic Council of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) during the recent CICA exhibition held in Bangkok from 8 to 10 April, in 2004 Thailand achieved a total floor and wall tile output of 157 million sq.m, about 15% up on 2003.
Domestic demand reached 114 million sq.m, while the value of exports of all ceramic products (including tableware and various household furnishings) totalled 430 million euro.
Again according to the Thai ceramic federation, sanitaryware production was 160,000 tons (13.5 million pieces), of which 74,000 tons were exported.
Further growth of around 7-8% is anticipated in 2005. During the current year domestic demand for floor and wall coverings is expected to reach 123 million sq.m and exports about 23 million sq.m.
Thailand thus confirms its role as a key producer country for the Asian ceramic industry, attracting more than 39 million euro of foreign capital annually. The participation of large international groups at CICA demonstrated their interest in the local industry. The largest groups taking part included Sacmi, Barbieri & Tarozzi, Sibelco, Ferro, Johnson Matthey Ceramics, Imerys, and the Chinese groups Ngy and Wanxing Inorganic Dyestuff.
